Fever Creek Festival Pop-up Record Store Pt II

Hier kommt Teil zwei der Review zum Fever Creek Pop-up Record Store. Auch dieses Mal stellen wir euch die neuen Veröffentlichungen von Künstlern vor, die beim Fever Creek Festival aufgetreten sind. Heute in der Review The Bribe and the Mockery, Skiing und KéPA.

Welcome to the second part of our review of the Fever Creek Pop-up Record Store. Again, we are going to present you new releases of artists that played at the Fever Creek Festival. Today are The Bribe and the Mockery, Skiing and KéPA part of the review.

Skiing – The Diary of a Rotary Phone

Eine Band der ersten Stunde ist Skiing. Beim Fever Creek Festival 2013 zeigte die Gruppe um den Sänger Everett Darling eine rasende Show zwischen Punk, Queercore und 50-er Jahre Rock ‘n’ Roll. Im Dezember 2014 kam ihr jüngstes Album “The Diary of a Rotary Phone” heraus. Skiing gehen den nächsten Schritt als Populärmusiker. Was früher jugendliche Revolte war, ist heute differenzierter und vielfältiger. Dabei ist die hohe Kunst der Popmusik Komplexes so auszudrücken, als wäre es das natürlichste der Welt. Das gelingt der Band auf wunderbare Weise. Wer das Album hört, kann sich fallen lassen und gemeinsam mit Skiing davon schweben.

Skiing is a band of the first hour. At the Fever Creek Festival in 2013 the group around singer Everett Darling played a raving show in-between Punk, Queercore and 50’s Rock’n’Roll. In December 2014 they put their new album “The Diary of a Rotary Phone” on the market and Skiing are going the next step as popular artists. What used to be a juvenile revolt, is nowadays more nuanced and diverse. Thereby the noble art of pop music is to express the complex as being the most natural thing in the world. This is accomplished by the band in a wonderful manner. Whoever listens to Skiing’s record can loose oneself and drift away.

The Bribe and the Mockery – Barely Poignant

The Bribe and the Mockery ist auch eine der ersten Bands, die wir für das Fever Creek Festival gewinnen konnten. Die beiden Musiker begeistern mit Anti-Folk zwischen verspielt und nachdenklich, analog und digital. Casio, Gesang und Gitarre – mehr braucht ihre Musik nicht. Anfang 2015 veröffentlichten sie die Barely Poignant EP auf Kassette. Der Song “How to catch a bird“ wurde als alternativer Soundtrack für den gleichnamigen Kurzfilm von Vera van Wolferen komponiert und auf dem Interfilm Kurzfilmfestival vorgespielt. Anti-Folk goes Filmmusik – Adam Green wäre begeistert.

The Bribe and the Mockery was one of the first bands that we could win over to play at the first Fever Creek Festival in 2013. The duo enthuses with Anti-Folk somewhere between playful and thoughtful, analogue and digital. Casio, vocals and a guitar – more is not needed. At the beginning of 2015 they released the Barely Poignant EP on tape. The song “How to catch a bird” was composed as an alternative soundtrack for the likewise named short film by Vera can Wolferen and was played live at the Interfilm short movie festival. Anti-Folk goes film music – Adam Green would delighted.

KéPA – Low-Low Wind

Das Gute braucht oft nicht viel. Gesang, Gitarre und Mundharmonika – so begeisterte KéPA als One Man Blues-Band auf dem Fever Creek Festival 2014. Im Februar 2015 veröffentlichte Bastien Duverdier, wie er mit bürgerlichem Namen heißt, sein neues Album “Low-Low Wind“. Und dass der Blues das Leben spiegelt, zeigt er auf dem Album mit Bravour: Freude und Aufbruchsstimmung klingen immer wieder durch, egal wie schwer es das Leben mit einem meint. Das kraftvolle und treibende Spiel, der besondere Sound seiner Resophonic-Gitarre und sein virtuoses Mundharmonikaspiel prägen die Songs. “A Challenge to the Dark“ startet beispielsweise mit dem Aufheulen der Mundharmonika, danach ein lässiger Anschlag zweier Akkorde, bevor das Lied richtig an Fahrt aufnimmt. Gesang setzt ein. Das Spiel steigert sich immer mehr und mündet im Refrain. Danach kurz Luft holen und im Grande Finale mit Mundharmonika und schnellem Gitarrenspiel noch einmal alles geben. Wer sich ins Leben stürzen möchte, bekommt mit dem Album die volle Ladung.

It does not take much to make good music. Vocals, guitar and a harmonica – this is how KéPA captivated the audience as a One Man Blues Band at the Fever Creek Festival in 2014. In February 2015 Bastien Duverdier, his real name, released the new record “Low-Low Wind”. On this he shows that Blues is life. It doesn’t matter how difficult life can be, he spreads the spirit of optimism and delight. The vigorous and impelling play, the unique sound of the resophonic guitar and his virtuosic play with the harmonica shape the songs. “A Challenge to the Dark” starts for example with the roar of the harmonica, then the casual strumming of two accords before the song picks up speed. Vocals start. The play increases more and more and concludes in the refrain. A short moment to take a breath follows before the song ends in the grand finale with harmonica and fast guitar play where KéPA gives everything. Whoever wants to throw themselves right into life, gets with the record the full dose.

Fever Creek Pop-up Record Store is opening

Mit dem 28. und 29. August nähert sich die nunmehr dritte Ausgabe des Fever Creek Festival. Drei Jahre, in denen viel Wasser den Fluss runtergeflossen ist. Einige Bands, die beim Festival gespielt haben, sind ihren Weg gegangen und haben in der jüngeren Vergangenheit spannende Singles oder sogar Alben auf Kassette, CD oder Vinyl veröffentlicht. Grund genug für uns, auf dem diesjährigen Festival den Bands einen eigenen Recordstore zu widmen. An beiden Festivaltagen könnt ihr die Platten der Bands vor Ort bekommen. Und damit auch jeder weiß, was es in unserem kleinen Store gibt, stellen wir diese schon einmal vor. Im ersten Teil möchten wir euch die Vinyls von Canyon Spree, Sick Hyenas und Volk vorstellen.

The 28th and 29th of August is getting close and with this the third edition of the Fever Creek Festival. Three years, where a lot of water poured down the river. Some bands that performed at the festival have gone their own way and released recently exciting songs or even albums on cassette, CD or vinyl. This is reason enough to give these bands and their records an own record store at this year’s festival. On both festival days you can get the records at our locations. So that everyone knows, what can be bought in our litlle record store, we will present you some of them. In the first part we will tell you something about the vinyls of Canyon Spree, Sick Hyenas and Volk.

Canyon Spree – Garden of Evil

Canyon Spree, die beim Fever Creek Festival 2014 im Marie-Antoinette gespielt haben, veröffentlichten jüngst ihr erstes Album “Garden of evil“ als Vinyl. Der Sound zwischen Garage Rock mit Psych-Anleihen und surfiger Leadgitarre erzählt die Geschichten von Horrorstreifen, Western und Roadmovies. In zwölf Songs nehmen die drei Frauen uns mit auf die Reise durch ausgetrocknete Wüsten, zu Teufelsanbetung in Hinterzimmern und verbotenen Orten. So heißen die Songs auch Badlands, Children of the Night oder Witches Sabbath. Aufgenommen wurde das Album klassisch analog auf einem 24-Spur-Tape-Recorder. Perfekt für Fans des Garage-Sounds.

Canyon Spree, that played at the Fever Creek Festival 2014 at the Marie-Antoinette, released just recently their first record “Garden of evil” on vinyl. The sound between garage rock with borrowings from psych and a surf playing lead guitar tells the stories of horror pieces, western and road movies. With 12 songs the three women take us on a journey through dried deserts, satan worshipping in backrooms and forbidden places. Hence, the songs are called “Badlands”, “Children of the Night” or “Witches Sabbath”. The album was recorded classically analog on a 24-track tape recorder. Perfect for fans of the garage sound.

Sick Hyenas – s/t

Februar 2015 standen Sick Hyenas beim Fever Creek Intermezzo auf den Brettern des Acud Clubs. Schon in 2014 kam ihr gleichnamiges Album heraus. Eine Platte gefüllt mit treibenden Garage Rock, der sich irgendwo zwischen Surf und Psych befindet, abgerundet mit einer Punk Attitude. Der Song “Hoe“ beginnt mit einem melodiösen Surf-Intro, bevor er an Fahrt aufnimmt und schließlich im Refrain stürmischer Gesang und Gitarren einsetzen, begleitet durch die peitschende Snare-Drum. Schnelle Parts wechseln sich mit ruhigen ab. Das überzeugte auch das Fanzine Ox, das der Platte acht von zehn möglichen Sternen gibt. Wer sie haben möchte, sollte nicht zu lange zögern. Von der Auflage sind nur noch wenige Vinyls zu haben.

In February 2015 Sick Hyenas were playing a gig at the Fever Creek Intermezzo on the planks of the Acud. Already in 2014 they released their same titled album. A record filled with driving garage rock that lays somewhere between surf and psych, accentuated with a punk attitude. The song “Hoe” starts with a melodic surf intro before it picks up speed and fierce vocals and guitars start in the chorus, accompanied by the lashing snare drum. Fast parts are changing with slower parts. This convinced the fanzine Ox, which gave the record eight of ten stars. Whoever wants to have, shouldn’t wait to long. The edition is strictly limited, only a few vinyls are left.

Volk – Boutique Western Swing Compositions

Auf dem Intermezzo 2015 spielte nicht nur Sick Hyenas, sondern auch Volk. Das Duo aus Texas und Kalifornien, welches sich zurzeit in Berlin niedergelassen hat, brachte im Januar 2015 ihr Erstlingswerk “Boutique Western Swing Compositions“ heraus. Auf der 12“ Maxi Vinyl Single sind vier Songs zwischen Country, Garage und Rock’n’Roll. Der Stil der Band kann als explosiv bezeichnet werden – laut und leise wechseln sich hier ab. Beim Einstiegssong “Simple Western Song“ zählt die abgedämpfte Gitarre und das leise Schlagzeugspiel die drohende Entladung ein, bevor alles auseinander fliegt. Wer mal richtig aus sich herausgehen möchte und das Bedürfnis spürt, einfach mal zu schreien, findet hier den passenden Soundtrack.

Volk also played at the Intermezzo 2015. The duo from Texas and California, who is living in Berlin at the moment, released in January 2015 their frst record “Boutique Western Swing Compositions”. On the 12” Maxi Vinyl Single are four songs between country, garage and rock’n’roll. The style of the band can be described as being explosive- noisy and quiet parts are switching. In the first song “Simple Western Song” the muted guitar and the silent drums are counting to the threatening discharge before everything bursts. Whoever wants to let it loose and has the need to scream, can find here the perfect soundtrack.

For the love of Folk: Review Intermezzo 2014

Dicht an dicht stehen die mehr als 180 Menschen im kleinen King Kong Klub. Sie erleben in Kürze das erste Fever Creek Intermezzo und zugleich eines der letzten Konzerte an diesem Ort in Mitte. Der Vermieter hat den Vertrag nicht verlängert, er lässt den Altbau sanieren und sucht sich womöglich neue, lukrativere Mieter – ein weiteres Kapitel im Berliner Clubsterben. Aber das alles spielt am Abend des 1. März erst einmal keine Hauptrolle. Im Fokus steht das Line-up, liebevoll zusammengestellt wie ein Mixtape. Inoffizieller Titel: For the love of Folk! Die drei Acts des Intermezzo 2014 – Town of Saints, Nïer und Frida & John – fühlen sich allesamt zum Storytelling hingezogen, könnten im Auftreten aber nicht unterschiedlicher sein. Frida & John eröffnen das Programm mit einem intimen Sit-in: zwei Stühle, zwei Gitarren, zwei Stimmen – mehr brauchen die beiden Berliner denn auch nicht, um mit ihrem 60s inspirierten Pop zu begeistern. Nïer, Zweiter auf der Bühne und ebenfalls aus Berlin, überzeugt als One Man Act mit Multitaskingtalent. Er singt, spielt Gitarre und schaltet an den Reglern seiner vielen Loops. Den Künstler bringt das nicht aus der Ruhe. Seine Bewegungen ähneln der Projektion, die an der Wand hinter ihm zu sehen ist: Nahaufnahmen eines gleichmäßig fließenden Gewässers. Die Performance, eine Mischung aus kühler Elektronik und sanftem Storytelling, zieht in den Bann. Anschließend folgt der mitreißende Auftritt von Town of Saints. Das Trio aus den Niederlanden, das zu einem Drittel aus Finnland kommt, ruft zum Indie Folk-Tanz auf. Energetischer Gesang, lautstarke Violine, antreibende Percussion – das Publikum lässt sich nicht zweimal bitten und schwingt mit. Für die Zugabe spielen Town of Saints abseits der Bühne – unplugged und unter den Zuschauern. Ein magischer Moment. Geschmeidig leitet das Dresdner DJ-Kollektiv misch masch sounds zur offiziellen Party über. Im Morgengrauen ist der Zauber leider schon wieder vorbei. Around 180 people are standing quite closely to each other in the small King Kong Klub. They are going to witness the first Fever Creek Intermezzo which is going to be at the same time one of the last concerts in this place in Mitte. The owner of the house did not extent the contract. He is going to renovate the old building and is looking possibly for new, remunerative renters- another chapter in Berlin’s high mortality rate among its clubs. But all this did not play the a role on the 1st of March. The focus is on the line-up, lovingly compiled like a mixtape. Informal title: For the love of Folk!

All three acts of the Intermezzo 2014 – Town of Saints, Nïer and Frida & John – have a tendency for storytelling but could not be more different in their performance. Frida & John opened the evening with an intimate sit-in: two chairs, two guitars, two voices – nothing more was needed by the two Berliners to arouse enthusiasm with their 60s inspired Pop. Nïer, second on stage and also based in Berlin, convinced as a one-man act with a multitasking talent. He sings, plays guitar and switches the controllers of his many loops. But the artist remains calm. His movements resemble the projection that is seen on the wall behind him: close-ups of steadily running water. The performance is a mixture of chilly Electronic music and gentle storytelling captures the audience. Following this, Town of Saints performed a stirring gig. The trio from the Netherlands that is to one third of Finish origin encourages the listeners to dance to their Indie Folk tunes. Energetic vocals, vociferous violin, incentive percussion – the audience did not needed to be asked twice and started moving to the beat. For the encore Town of Saints performed aside from the stage – unplugged and among the audience. A magical moment. The DJ team misch masch sounds from Dresden then smoothly build the bridge for the official party. At dawn the charm of the night is sadly gone. 1st Edition of Fever Creek Festival: A Review

Nahezu ausverkauft war die erste Ausgabe unseres Fever Creek Festivals Ende August. In zwei Berliner Clubs spielten lokale und internationale Musiker des Folk, Blues und Garage. Aber auch Elektronisches wurde aufgelegt; die unterschiedlichen Musikrichtungen ergaben ein stimmiges Ganzes. Tonangebend war dabei stets die Gitarre. (english version below)

Tag eins: Berliner Untergrund

Schummriges Licht und der Geruch frisch gezapftes Bieres bestimmten die Atmosphäre des Clubs Zosch – einer Bastion alternativer Musik rund um die luxuriöse Oranienburgerstraße. Passend zum Club-Ambiente trat die Rock- und Garage-Fraktion unseres Line-ups auf. Das Publikum war bunt gemischt, die Stimmung ausgelassen und erwartungsvoll. Zu Beginn spielte Steve. Das Riot Girl-Duo aus Berlin legte seinen ersten Bühnenauftritt überhaupt hin. Die Kür gelang durch starke Songs und unbändige Spielfreude. Anschließend begeisterte das lokale Garage-Trio Morning Paranoia mit lauten und leisen Tönen, die von Angst, Erwartung oder Enttäuschung erzählten. Ähnlich kraftvoll-melancholisch ging es mit den von Nick Cave und Americana beeinflussten Norwegern The Violent Years weiter. Die Fünf trugen dabei – wie es sich für Folkrocker gehört – spitze Lederschuhe, enge Jeans und karierte Hemden. Der erste Festivaltag fand seinen würdigen Abschluss mit dem Auftritt von Skiing, vier Männern (Titelfoto), die ebenso zuckersüß waren wie ihre von Punk, Queercore und 50er Jahre Rock ‘n’ Roll inspirierte Musik. Betört von den Sounds ließen Bands und Zuschauer den Abend gemeinsam an der Bar ausklingen.

Tag zwei: Heimelig-norwegisch

Abwechslungsreich ging es am Folgetag im Friedrichshainer Kulturzentrum Antje Öklesund weiter, dessen Namensvetterin aus Norwegen stammt. Zwischen Plüschlampen und Kunstobjekten ließen sich die Zuschauer zunächst auf dem Boden nieder, als ob sie bei Freunden zuhause seien. Auftritt: The Bribe and the Mockery und Vincent Long & The Convincers. Beide Bands pflegten das Storytelling, aber jede auf ihre Art. The Bribe and The Mockery verzauberten mit einem modernen Mix aus Folk und elektronischen Einspielern.

Vincent Long und seine Band bewegten sich auf traditionelleren Singer/Songwriter-Pfaden, die sie mit Spontanität und Humor aufzulockern wussten – zum Beispiel, wenn Vincent Long zum DJ-Pult rannte und dort einen Song unplugged beendete oder wenn er gemeinsam mit Moritz Lehr von The Bribe and the Mockery jammte (Foto links). In diesen Momenten zeigte sich Folk von seiner neuen und aufregenden Seite.

Zum zweiten Mal auf der Bühne stand an diesem Abend auch The Violent Years. Aber wer denkt, dass die Norweger das gleiche wie am Vortag spielten (und trugen), irrte. Sie schöpften als closing act aus den Vollen ihres 200 Songs umfassenden Repertoires und präsentierten ganz in Schwarz ein anderes, sehr kontrastreiches Set, von langsamen Stücken bis Hillbilly. Das Publikum begann zu tanzen. Ein gelungener Übergang zur Elektro-After Show Party und ein gelungener Abschluss für das erste Fever Creek Festival.

The first edition of the Fever Creek Festival in late August was nearly sold out. Local and international musicians of Folk, Blues and Garage music performed in two different venues in Berlin. But also electronic music was present; the various music genres yielded a harmonious whole. The guitar was ever present.

Day one: Berlin’s underground

Dim light and the smell of freshly trapped beer was in the air of the Zosch – a bastion of alternative music around the luxurious Oranienburgerstraße. Matching the club ambience our Rock and Garage part of our line up entered the stage. The audience was farraginous, the atmosphere was exuberant and eager. At the beginning Steve performed. The Riot Girl Duo from Berlin had their first stage performance ever, successfully getting through it with strong songs and an irrepressibly delight to perform. Afterwards the local Garage trio Morning Paranoia sparked the audience with loud and quiet sounds that tell the story of fear, expectation or frustration. Likely vibrantly melancholic was the performance of the Norwegians The Violent Years who are influenced by Nick Cave and Americana. The quintet was dressed in pointed leather shoes, tight jeans and lumberjack shirts- as it is right and proper for a Folk Rock band. The first festival day had its dignified end with the performance of Skiing (cover photo), four guys that were as twee as their music inspired by Punk, Queercore and 50’s Rock ’n’ Roll. Besotted by the sound the bands and their crowd enjoyed the bar conjointly.

Day two: homely-Norwegian

The next day went on diversified at the cultural centre Antje Öklesund in Friedrichshain which namesake comes from Norway. Between plushy lamps and art objects the audience firstly sat down on the floor like they would be at their friend’s house. Performance: The Bribe and The Mockery and Vincent Long & The Convincers. Both bands cherished the storytelling but both in their own way. The Bribe and The Mockery enchanted with a modern mix of Folk and electronic interludes. Vincent Long and his band were more headed to traditional singer/songwriter paths that they eased up with spontaneity and humour. When Vincent Long ran to the Dj-stand to end up his song there unplugged or when he jammed with Moritz Lehr of The Bribe and the Mockery (above) are just two examples of that. During these moments Folk gave a good account of itself and its new and thrilling side.

For a second time on stage were The Violent Years (left). Anyone thinking that they had the same set as they played the day before (and were dressed alike) is mistaken. They drawn on their about 200 comprising repertoire and presented all dressed in black a different, very contrastive set with a range from long songs to Hillbilly. The audience started to dance – a felicitous transition to the after show party with electronic music and a successful end for the first Fever Creek Festival.
