Not A Citizen is the collaborative project by Cristobal Jimenez Van Cauwelaert. It evolved from a beat making solo idea to a full band after moving to London in 2014. The sound that defines Not A Citizen is a mix of sampled hip hop drum breaks, jazz guitars and psychedelic vocals; all influenced by the UK’s DIY and lo-fi scene.

Now Not A Citizen has included Reuben Kemp on bass and Chilton Fawcett on drums to promote the self released EP ‘Flat 3’ and work on new songs.

As the famous John Lennon quote goes: “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.” This expression could not be more definitive for Scar Polish, moniker to Robin Fisher’s colorful patchwork of glitched-out melodies, whirling echoes and tie-dyed guitars, which seemingly came about by accident.

Shortly after moving to Berlin to pursue acoustic songwriting, Fisher’s flat was broken into, the thieves leaving behind only a small sampler. “Science Friction” is the demonstration of an unexpected change of course and the culmination of time alone spent digging into one instrument.

The 5 track EP, which follows on from the mind-bending debut video “Protein Coated Sadness”, treads the line between lo-fi psychedelic rock and gritty electronica.

Ghost Pony was created by singer and guitarist Julia Beresikowa in her hometown Erfurt. As she moved to Berlin, the band’s change of location was the perfect opportunity to expand its sound as well. What used to be a duo quickly became a quartet by first adding Elisa Bischoff on bass followed shortly by Franzi Smith as lead guitarist. Now under the name of Ghost Pony, there was another change being made: Hannes Neupert who already played alongside Elisa and Franzi in their former band The Mokkers and member of Mexican Radio, joined in on drums.

In this formation the group is making their way through the Berlin Underground scene since 2017, playing their own mix of Surf, Dream Pop and Garage labelled as Mud Pop.

Seed Holden plays melancholic Americana Folk, inspired by the lowlands of Croatia

Seed Holden ist der Künstlername des kroatischen Singer-Songwriters Ljudevit Ivić. Mal tritt der 27-Jährige ohne, mal mit Band auf. Doch der Kern seiner Musik bleibt der gleiche: melancholisch-verträumter Americana Folk, inspiriert sowohl von der Tiefebene seiner Heimatregion Slawonien als auch von musikalischen Seelenverwandten wie Bruce Springsteen, Phosphorescent und Gregory Alan Isakov.

Nach Veröffentlichung einiger EPs und des Debüts “Script” im Jahre 2016 präsentierte Seed Holden diesen Februar ein neues Album: “The Fall Of My Youth”. Viele kroatische Musikkritiker äußerten sich lobend: Das Werk sei “ehrlich, nostalgisch und vielfältig”, die Texte würden “die Herzen der Menschen öffnen”, und die Arrangements erinnerten an die “Folk-Bohème der 60er-Jahre aus Greenwich Village”.

Seed Holden gehört in seiner Heimat der jungen Singer-Songwriter-Garde an, die die Sprachbarriere durchdringt und auf Englisch singt. In den vergangenen Jahren spielte er hauptsächlich in Kroatien, unter anderem auf dem CMC Slavonija Fest. Das ändert sich jetzt. Mit dem Umzug nach Berlin wegen eines Studiums der Musikproduktion kann er nun auch in Deutschland ein neues Publikum für sich gewinnen.

Fever Creek Festival: Was bedeutet Seed Holden?
Seed Holden: Nichts bestimmtes, ich mochte den Klang und wie es geschrieben aussieht.

Auf deinem neuen Album schaust du zurück in deine Teenager-Tage, obwohl du eigentlich ja noch sehr jung bist. Was hat dich dazu veranlasst?
Die Fähigkeit, im Moment zu sein, ist für mich manchmal nur schwer zu erreichen. Ich bin eher ein nostalgischer Typ, der relativ häufig auf sein Leben zurück blickt. Das ist eine unerschöpfliche Inspirationsquelle für mich und veranlasste mich zum Schreiben von “The Fall Of My Youth”. Auf dem Album blicke ich aber nicht im Zorn zurück, eher mit Zärtlichkeit, Liebe und manchmal ein wenig bitterer Würze.

Gibt es irgendetwas an deiner Musik, dass du als typisch “kroatisch” bezeichnen würdest?
Da Kroatien am Schnittpunkt zwischen Zentraleuropa, Südosteuropa und dem Adria-Raum liegt, hat das Land ein vielfältiges Erbe, kulturell wie auch musikalisch. Ob ich nun wollte oder nicht, diesem Einfluss kann ich mich entziehen. Slawonien zum Beispiel, die Region, aus der ich komme, ist eine Tiefebene. Ich wollte deren melancholisch-verträumte Atmosphäre auf dem neuen Album einfangen. Aber es gibt nicht-kroatische Musiker, die mich stark beeinflussen, wie zum Beispiel Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Matthew Houck von Phosphorescent, Mark Knopfler, John Fullbright und Gregory Alan Isakov.

Momentan lebst du in Berlin. Was sind deine Pläne für die Zukunft?
Viele inspirierende Menschen treffen, live spielen, um “The Fall Of My Youth” zu promoten und weiter an neuen Songs arbeiten. Ich will mir einfach die Hände schmutzig machen und vorwärts kommen.

Seed Holden is a moniker of Croatian singer-songwriter Ljudevit Ivić. Sometimes the 27-year-old performs solo, sometimes with a band but the core of his music stays the same: melancholic and dreamy Americana Folk, inspired by the lowlands of his home region Slavonia and musical kindred spirits such as Bruce Springsteen, Phosphorescent and Gregory Alan Isakov.

After releasing a couple of EPs and the debut “Script” in 2016 Seed Holden presented a new album this February: “The Fall Of My Youth”. It was largely acclaimed by Croatian music critics, calling it “honest, nostalgic and divers”, with lyrics that “open the hearts of the people”, and arrangements that reminiscents the “60s Folk Bohème of Greenwich Village”.

In Croatia, Seed Holden is part of a young singer-songwriter scene who has overcome the language barrier by singing in English. In the last couple of years he played mostly in his homeland, among others at the big festival CMC Slavonija. But a change is gonna come. Now studying audio engineering and music production in Berlin Seed Holden has the chance to reach a new audience in Germany.

Fever Creek Festival: What does Seed Holden mean?
Seed Holden: Nothing particular, I just liked how it sounded and looked on the paper.

On your new album you look back at your teenage years, even though you are still quite young. What made you do this?
The ability to stay in the moment is really tough to achieve sometimes. In my nature I am a nostalgic guy. So looking back at my life happens really frequently and is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. I captured this on “The Fall Of My Youth”. In my songs I am not looking back in anger but in fondness with some bitter flavours from time to time.

Is there anything in your music that you would describe as typical “Croatian”?
Situated at the crossroad of Central Europe, Southeast Europe and Adriatic region, Croatia is a country full of diverse heritage, both cultural and therefore musical. Whether I like it or not I could not escape its influences. The part I originally come from, Slavonia, is lowland and I think that the melancholic and dreamy atmosphere that comes from this place is captured on the new album. But I’m also influenced by other musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Matthew Houck from Phosphorescent, Mark Knopfler, John Fullbright and Gregory Alan Isakov.

You are now living in Berlin. What are your plans for the future?
Meeting many people which I draw the inspiration from, playing gigs to promote “The Fall Of My Youth” and continue working on new stuff – just to get my hands dirty and keep moving.

Endlich einen Schlussstrich ziehen und neu anfangen. Das hatten die schottischen Brüder Matthew und Steve Morris im Sinn, als sie Milwalkie vor rund einem Jahr auflösten. Sie gründeten die Indie Rock-Band als Jugendliche in Aberdeen und führten sie als junge Erwachsene, nach dem Umzug 2011, in Berlin weiter. Aber ein paar Alben und zahlreiche Konzerte später war das Feuer erloschen.

Neue Funken sprühten, als sich die Brüder im vergangenen Winter mit Douglas Mackay zu Soft Crystals zusammenfanden. Auch wenn sie bis jetzt noch keine richtige Platte vorweisen können, geben die paar Songs im Web einen guten Eindruck von ihrer künstlerischen Vision. “The Missing Suburb” oder auch “The 24hr Store” stehen für ehrliches Storytelling und gelassenen Indie Rock, der sich mit persönlichen Problemen, vergangenen Beziehungen und Einsamkeit beschäftigt. Eine weitere Inspirationsquelle ist die cineastische Welt von Richard Linklater und Jim Jarmusch.

Dieser Neuanfang blieb nicht unbemerkt. In der kurzen Zeit ihrer Gründung sind Soft Crystals schon als Vorband für die Berliner Band Pictures und den deutschen Singer-Songwriter Philipp Dittberner getourt. Also was steht als Nächstes an? Fever Creek Festival: Matt, 2011 bist du mit deinem Bruder nach Berlin gezogen. Wie kam es dazu?
Matt: Wir waren gelangweilt von Aberdeen, unserer kleinen Stadt, und die Idee, innerhalb Großbritanniens umzuziehen, war ebenso langweilig. Steve war vorher schon einmal in Berlin. Als er mir davon erzählte, klang es nach dem Ort, wo man sein sollte. Wir hatten keine Ersparnisse, keinen Plan – aber es hat funktioniert. Wir sind beide glücklicher als zuvor. Es ging uns dabei nicht um die Musik, und darum geht es uns auch bis heute nicht. Steve ist Besitzer eines Coffeeshops, den wir mit Freunden betreiben. Dadurch fühlt es sich manchmal gar nicht nach Arbeit an. Wenn ich in Schottland leben würde, müsste ich wahrscheinlich 60 Stunden die Woche schufften, um so zu leben wie hier.

Fühlt ihr euch in Berlin zu Hause?
Es ist seltsam. Immer, wenn ich meine Familie in Aberdeen besuche, fühle ich mich wie ein Tourist. Dieses Gefühl habe ich nicht, wenn ich an den Ort zurückzukehre, wo ich hingehöre, aber so richtig heimisch fühle ich mich in Berlin auch noch nicht.

Soft Crystals steht für euren musikalischen Neuanfang. Wieso habt ihr diesen Namen gewählt?
Ich habe einfach nur Soft Crystals im Kopf ausgesprochen und mochte den Klang des Oxymorons. Es könnte etwas bedeuten, aber eventuell tut es das nicht.

Eure jüngste Single heißt “The 24hr Store”. Hattest du beim Schreiben einen bestimmten Laden im Kopf, vielleicht in Aberdeen oder Berlin?
In “The 24hr Store” geht es darum, wie ich mit meiner Ex-Freundin in diesem riesigen Supermarkt in der Nähe meines Elternhauses in Aberdeen Eiscreme kaufe. Es gibt dort wirklich nicht viele Beschäftigungsmöglichkeiten. In einigen Nächten ist das die beste Option.

Ihr habt ein paar Songs im Internet veröffentlicht. Wie soll es weitergehen?
Momentan üben wir sehr viel für unser erstes Album. Das wollen wir komplett live aufnehmen. Ich habe immer schon die Drums selber aufgenommen. Es ist meist einfacher und schneller, denn wenn ich die Idee im Kopf habe, kann ich es schnell realisieren. Der einzige Nachteil darin ist, dass es meist den Song nicht mehr so dynamisch macht, wie er sein könnte, wenn mehrere Leute sich in einem Aufnahmeraum treffen, und viele verschiedene Ideen entstehen. Wenn wir dann die Songs live spielen, klingen sie so viel besser als die Aufnahmen. Sie sind interessanter, nachdem sie in ihre Einzelteile zerlegt wurden. Deswegen haben wir uns dieses Mal dafür entschieden, den Live-Klang einzufangen.

Sometimes it is better to bring something to an end and start over. That is what the Scottish brothers Matthew and Steve Morris had in mind when they quit Milwalkie about one year ago, an Indie Rock band they formed as teenagers in Aberdeen and continued as young adults after moving to Berlin in 2011. But some recordings and many concerts later, the fire has gone out.

New sparks began to fly in winter 2017, when the brothers teamed up with Douglas Mackay for Soft Crystals. Even though the three have not released a proper album, yet, the songs on YouTube and Bandcamp work very well as an introduction to the band‘s creative vision. “The Missing Suburbs“ or “The 24hr store“ stand for honest storytelling and laid-back Indie Rock, dealing with personal struggle, past relationships and loneliness, drawing also inspirations from the cinematic world of Richard Linklater and Jim Jarmusch.

The new beginning did not go unnoticed. In their short period of existence Soft Crystals already toured in bigger halls as opening act for the Berlin band Pictures and the German singer-songwriter Philipp Dittberner. So what comes next? We talked with Matt about the past, present and future of his new band!

Fever Creek Festival: Matt, in 2011 you moved with your brother to Berlin. How did that happen?
Matt: We were bored of Aberdeen, our small city, and the idea of moving anywhere else in Britain was too boring as well. Steve had been in Berlin years before that. When he told me about it, I thought that sounds like the place to be. We had no savings, no plan, but it worked out. We are both much happier because of it. It was not really about the music and it is still not. Steve owns a coffee shop which we basically run with all of our friends. So sometimes it feels like we do not even have jobs. If I lived in Scotland, I would probably have to work 60 hours a week to live like I do here.

Do you feel at home in Berlin?
It is weird. Whenever I visit my parents back in Aberdeen I feel like a tourist there. I do not get that feeling of returning to where I belong but I also do not have it here yet.

Soft Crystals stands for the new musical beginning in your life. Why did you choose that name?
I just said Soft Crystals in my head and I liked the sound of the oxymoron. It could mean something, but it probably does not.

Your latest single is called “The 24hr Store”. Did you had a particular store in mind while writing the song?
“The 24hr Store” is about me getting ice cream with my ex girlfriend in this huge supermarket near my parent‘s house in Aberdeen. There is really nothing to do there. So for some nights this is pretty much the best option.

After releasing a couple of songs on the web, what are your future plans?
Right now we are rehearsing a lot. We want to record our first proper release live. I have always recorded drums myself. It is usually just easier and quicker because when I have the idea in my head, I can just lay it all down quickly. The only thing about that is, it usually stops the songs from being as dynamic as they could be because when you come together with people in a recording room, all kinds of different ideas happen. Then when we end up playing those songs live, they sound much better than the recordings. They are just more interesting after having being hashed out. So this time we decided to capture that live sound.

We already promised you that Friday will be folky! But so far we only introduced The Bribe and The Mockery that shake up the singer-songwriter genre with keyboard and quotes from their favourite tv series. The rest of the line-up is certainly no less exciting…

The also Berlin based band Rest Now, Paul takes a darker path, combining ghostly lyrics with lingering percussions and roaring guitars. The sound reminds a little bit of Folk Goth darling Chelsea Wolfe. In contrast to that, we have the headliner Beachtown Exile, imported from Canada, performing a light-hearted folky mix of Old School Rock’n’Roll and R&B.

Dark, ghostly, enigmatic: The songs of Rest Now, Paul ranges from Doom Pop to Post Rock

Zwischen Doom-Pop und Post-Rock: Die Weddinger Band Rest Now, Paul steht seit 2016 auf Berliner Bühnen wie Wild at Heart oder Marie-Antoinette. Ihre Songs erinnern ein wenig an Chelsea Wolfe. Sie sind ähnlich düster, gespenstisch, rätselhaft, und werden getragen von einer starken Frauenstimme. Die Texte handeln oft von Träumen, noch mehr von Alpträumen, die so intensiv sind, dass sie einen nicht loslassen. “Drained” ist so ein Beispiel. Die Verse schrieb Sängerin Kara nach einer unruhigen Nacht. Im Schlaf wurde sie auf dem Weg zu einer Abschlussprüfung von blutrünstigen, in der Luft fliegenden Zähnen verfolgt. Doch nicht Prüfungsangst oder Vampire stellen hier das Thema, vielmehr das Ohnmachtsgefühl durch Verpflichtungen gegenüber Anderen ausgesaugt zu werden.

“Drained” ist einer von drei wunderbar-verstörenden Songs auf der 2016 erschienenen Debüt-EP. Karas kraftvoller Gesang windet sich darauf um die schleppende Percussion und den heulend gröhlenden Gitarren von Mitstreitern Tim, Hendrik und Shahar. Zusammen stellen sie sich den Schrecken der Nacht und ziehen den Zuhörer damit unweigerlich in den Bann.

Was inspiriert euch?

Hendrik ist ein Kino-Mensch und hat dementsprechende Assoziationen. Kara verwertet alle möglichen Gedanken und Erlebnisse in ihren Texten. Einen sehr großen Einfluss auf den Sound hat für sowohl Hendrik als auch für Kara die Musik von Chelsea Wolfe.

Das Fever Creek Festival feiert dieses Jahr seinen fünften Geburtstag. Was waren eure besten Geburtstagserinnerungen?

Hendrik: Ich war tatsächlich die größte Geburtstagsüberraschung für meine ältere Schwester. Wir haben nämlich am gleichen Tag Geburtstag – nur drei Jahre auseinander.

Between Doom-Pop and Post-Rock: The Wedding based band Rest Now, Paul are playing on stages in Berlin like the Wild at Heart and the Marie-Antoinette. Their songs remind a little bit of Chelsea Wolfe. They are likely dark, ghostly, enigmatic and are underpinned by a strong female voice. The lyrics are often about dreams, even more about nightmares, that are so intense, that they do not fade away easily. “Drained” is one of those examples. The lyrics were written by Kara after a restless night. In her sleep she was haunted by bloodthirsty teeth that flew in the air while going to her final exam. But not exam nerves or vampires are the theme here, the song deals overall with the feeling of powerlessness towards obligations to others and to be absorbed by it.

“Drained” is one of three nicely unsettling songs on their 2016 released debut EP. Kara’s enticing voice winds its way around the lingering percussion and roaring guitar sounds by her companions Tim, Hendrik and Shahar. Together they face the horrors of the night and fascinate the audience inevitably.

Who is this Paul?

Where is the fun, if we would now cave in? Many people asked us, but no one got the right answer – the truth will remain a mystery …

What inspires you?

Hendrik likes the movies and has associations from them. Kara uses all kinds of thoughts and experiences in her lyrics. A great influence on the sound is for Hendrik as well as for Kara the music of Chelsea Wolfe.

The Fever Creek Festival is celebrating its 5th birthday this year. What are your best birthday memories?

Hendrik: I was actually the greatest birthday surprise for my sister. Our birthday is on the same day – just three years apart.

Beachtown Exile brings you a weird mixture of old school Rock’n’Roll and R&B that feels modern, but not sickeningly so

Beachtown Exile ist der Kanadier Liam McArdle. Über Husum und Hamburg machte sich das junge Talent mittlerweile nach Berlin auf. Zusammen mit Musikern aus Schweden und seiner Heimat arbeitet Liam weiter an dem, was er als verrückte Mischung aus Old School Rock’n’Roll und R&B bezeichnet.

Auf der Bühne beweist der Frontmann absolute Entertainer-Qualitäten. Mit souliger Stimme, humorvollen Texten und ekstatischem Gitarrenspiel bringt er die Zuschauer zum Tanzen. Das gleiche gilt für die Studioaufnahmen. Man fängt ungweigerlich an, in der Wohnung herumzuwirbeln, wenn im Hintergrund der beschwingte Country-Pop-Opener “I would & I should” von der EP “Beachtown Exile II” (2016) läuft oder der 60er-Jahre-Rock inspirierte Track “Holiday” von der EP “Good Night” (2017). 3 Fragen an Liam von Beachtown Exile

Du beschreibst deinen Sound als eine Mischung aus Old School Rock’n’Roll und R&B. Was gefällt dir daran?

Diese Genres sind wie ein großer lodernder Funke, der durch tiefe Liebe und einem wahren Verständnis von Rebellion entzündet wird. Das eine macht ohne das andere keinen Sinn. Inspiration finde ich bei The Beach Boys, Sly Stone, Velvet Underground, The Beatles, aber auch neueren Helden wie Mayer Hawthorne und Mac Demarco. Auch bei ihnen geht es darum, diese Gefühle aufzugreifen und loszulassen, immer verknüpft mit etwas Sinnhaftigkeit. Das ist befriedigend.

Viele dieser Künstler haben ihren eigenen Bühnen-Look, ob Anzug oder Hawaiihemd. Was ist dein liebstes Konzert-Outfit?

Ich verkleide mich eigentlich nicht extra. Ich setze oft mein altes neongelbes Baseball Cap auf, das ich eigentlich immer trage, vielleicht noch ein hübsches T-Shirt und meine Jeansjacke. In letzter Zeit sind noch meine Laufschuhe dazu gekommen.

Dieses Jahr feiert das Fever Creek Festival seinen 5. Geburtstag. An welchen Geburtstag erinnerst du dich gerne zurück?

Vergangenes Jahr habe ich einen “Pornokuchen” gebacken und bin den ganzen Tag durch Berlin gelaufen. Ich kam zufällig an einer Kunstausstellung eines skurrilen, indigenen Künstlers vorbei, an dessen Namen ich mich nicht erinnern kann, und er meinte zur mir: “Der Zweck von Kunst ist es, das zu tun, was sonst im Leben nicht erlaubt ist.” Ich mag diese Aussage. Kunst ist nicht nur eine Form von Flucht, sondern auch ein Weg, die Dinge auszudrücken, die man nicht ausdrücken kann, ohne jemanden zu beleidigen oder zu verärgern. Das fühlte sich sehr befreiend an.

Behind Beachtown Exile is the Canadian Liam McArdle. After living in Husum and Hamburg, the young talent moved to Berlin. Together with musicians from Sweden and his homeland he keeps on working on what he describes as a weird mixture of Old School Rock’nRoll and R&B.

3 questions to Liam from Beachtown Exile

You describe your sound as a mixture of Old School Rock’n’Roll und R&B. What do you like about these genres?

These genres have a great spark that comes from deep love and a true sense of rebellion. One gives purpose to the other. From the Beach Boys, Sly Stone, Velvet Underground and The Beatles, all the way to Mayer Hawthorne and Mac Demarco, it’s just all about taking those feelings and letting loose, yet with some sense of purpose. It’s gratifying.

Many artists of these genres like to dress up on stage. What is your favourite stage outfit?

I don’t dress up really. I just wear the same dirty old formerly neon yellow I hat I wear all the time, maybe a nice shirt and my denim jacket. And usually my runners these days!

This year, The Fever Creek Festivals celebrates its 5th birthday. What is your best birthday memory?

Last year I made a “Pornakuchen” and walked around Berlin all day. I stumbled upon an art exhibition of a quirky Indian artist, whose name I can’t pronounce nor remember, said something to the effect of: The purpose of art is to do what you are not allowed to in life. I liked that. Not just an escape, but an avenue for things that perhaps just can’t be expressed without pissing everybody off. It felt freeing.

The Bribe and the Mockery erheben das eigene Scheitern zur Kunstform. Ihrer Meinung nach machen sie nichts so richtig, alles ein bisschen, und das meiste irgendwie falsch. Mit Galgenhumor bringen Lennart und Moritz traurig-komische Verlierergeschichten zu Papier und auf Gitarre, Casio und Sample-Maschine. Beim Hören der „weirden“ Folk-Songs entfaltet sich wohlig warme Intimität. Eine unsichtbare Hand legt sich auf die Schulter und sagt, dass alles halb so wild ist. Schließlich sitzen wir alle im selben Boot…

Das Duo lernt sich 2010 in Marburg während des Studiums kennen. Inzwischen wohnen beide in Berlin. Wenn sie sich nicht gegenseitig ihr Leid klagen, touren sie, nehmen nachts in Moritz’ Zimmer Songs auf Kassette auf oder bringen eine EP heraus, wie zuletzt “Reason Will Prevail”, abgemischt in Frankfurt am Main, veröffentlicht auf dem slowakischen Indie-Label “Resonating Wood Recordings”. Die Hoffnung der Beiden: Vielleicht kauft das ja irgendwer. Wir sagen: Ganz sicher!

3 Fragen an The Bribe and the Mockery

Eure Musik setzt sich aus verschiedenen Sounds zusammen: Gesang, Gitarre, Keyboard und Sound Samples aus TV-Serien. Wie fügt Ihr diese Einzelteile zusammen?

Basis sind meist Gitarre und Gesang. Die weiteren Elemente kommen natürlich dazu. Und da wir beide viele Serien konsumieren und uns das, was wir konsumieren, auch beeinflusst, möchten wir versuchen das mit einzubauen. Wir nutzen die Samples in unseren Songs, wenn wir das Gefühl haben, dass sie ihnen etwas hinzufügen, das nur durch eine andere Stimme vermittelt werden kann. Wir versuchen in unserer Musik eine Weltsicht zu beschreiben, die möglichst nah an unserer Lebensrealität liegt. Da gehören Medienkonsum und Popkultur unweigerlich dazu. Wie Talib Kweli bei einem Track von Danger Doom sagt: “It seem to me that cartoons be realer than Reality TV.”

Ihr erhebt Scheitern zur Kunstform. Aus welchem Scheitern habt Ihr persönlich am meisten gelernt?

Das ist ja genau die Frage. Wird wirklich etwas gelernt, oder ist die Wahrnehmung des Scheiterns überhaupt so unumstößlich, dass nur sie unser Handeln bestimmen kann? Erst einmal geht es darum, Scheitern zu akzeptieren. Scheitern ist immer Teil von jedem künstlerischen Prozess. Für uns ist es halt auch Teil des Ergebnisses. So wird unsere Musik menschlich, intim und greifbar. Aber was Scheitern bedeutet, entscheidet jeder für sich selbst. Positiv ausgedrückt, hoffen wir, dass unsere Musik dadurch eine gewisse Ehrlichkeit bekommt. Wir verstehen uns da in der Tradition des Anti-Folk.

Dieses Jahr feiert das Fever Creek Festival seinen fünften Geburtstag. Wir freuen uns auf viele nette Momente und darauf, dass Ihr als erste Festivalband der Stunde erneut bei uns spielt. Was war bisher eure beste Geburtstagserinnerung?

Naja, wir feiern hier ja den Geburtstag vom Fever Creek Festival, daher soll es hierbei mit nichten um uns gehen. Der tatsächliche Geburts-Tag des Fever Creek Festivals ist für unsere Band auf jeden Fall eine der schönsten Erinnerungen, da es sich damals für uns zum ersten Mal so anfühlte, dass wir unsere Musik tatsächlich in die Welt hinaustragen können, und von dort draußen auch etwas zurückkommt. (Zum Zeitpunkt des Interviews steht Moritz kurz vor seinem 30. Geburtstag. Geburtstage sind also gerade kein einfaches Thema. Lennart ist diesem bestimmten Thema schon resignierend näher gekommen und übt sich in Akzeptanz. Nur die Zeit bleibt für immer unserer beider Feind.)

The Bribe and the Mockery raise their own failure to a form of art. In their opinion, they do nothing perfectly, everything a little bit and most times they do it wrong. With their black humor Lennart and Moritz create tragic-comic stories of losers on paper and accentuate those with guitar, keyboard and sample-machine tunes. While listening to these weird Folk songs, a warmth intimacy is unfolded. An invisible hand of comfort rests on your shoulder and says, that everything is not as bad as it looks. We are all in the same boat…

The duo met in 2010 in Marburg in university. Nowadays both are living in Berlin. If they are not voicing their distress to each other, they are on tour, record songs on tapes during nighttime in Moritz’s room or release an EP, like “Reason Will Prevail”, that was mixed in Frankfurt and released on the Slovakian indie label “Resonating Wood Recordings”. Their hope: Maybe somebody will buy their music. We respond: No doubt!

3 questions to The Bribe and the Mockery

Your music is composed of different sounds: guitar, vocals, keyboard and sound samples from tv series. How do you merge the different parts?

Most of the time, the guitar and the vocals are the base. The other elements are just added naturally. And since we both consume many series and that, what we watch, certainly does influence us, we try to integrate that into our music. We use the samples in our songs when we have the feeling that they add something that only can be conveyed through another voice. We try to describe a world view that is pretty close to our real life. Media consumption as well as pop culture are an unavoidable part of it. Like Talib Kweli in a track of Danger Doom says: “It seem to me that cartoons be realer than Reality TV.”

You make failure an art form. From which failures did you learn personally the most?

That is the question. Do we really learn something or is our perception of failure so irrevocable, that only that can determine our actions? First of all, its all about accepting our failures. Those are always a part of every artistic process. For us it is also a part of the result. With that, our music is human, intimate and tangible. But what failure exactly means, everyone has to decide for themselves. To put it positively: We hope that our music gains with that a certain level of honesty. We see ourselves in the tradition of Anti-Folk.

This year, The Fever Creek Festivals celebrates its 5th birthday. We are looking forward to making nice moments and to see you as on of our first acts ever play again at the festival. But we want to know: What is your best birthday memory?

Well, since we are celebrating the birthday of the Fever Creek Festival, this shouldn’t be about us. The actual date of birth of the Fever Creek Festival is for our band one of the loveliest memories we have, because it was the first time that we felt, that we can spread our message in the world and will get back something from it. (At the time of the interview, Moritz was about to turn 30. So birthdays are not an easy topic right now. Lennart already got closer to this topic, takes it with resignation and practices himself in acceptance. Just the time will stay our mutual enemy.)

The Third Sound ranges from hypnotic soundscape ballads to psyched out and fuzzed up numbers

Formiert 2010 in Rom ist dieses Soloprojekt von Hakon Aðalsteinsson mit dem Umzug nach Berlin neu aufgeblüht. Mittlerweile stehen dem Isländer vier Musiker zur Seite, die sich für The Third Sound vom Charakter der Stadt inspirieren lassen: Licht und Dunkelheit, Traum und Realität, Pop und Psych vermischen sich in hypnotischen Klanglandschaften, zusammengehalten von Hakons tiefem Gesang.

In Berlin fand das Ex-Mitglied von Singapore Sling auch einen Förderer: den 50-jährigen Anton Newcombe. Der amerikanische Produzent und Gründer der Band The Brian Jonestown Massacre gilt als Pionier des neuen Psych-Sounds. Auch er lebt seit einiger Zeit in Berlin. Hier veröffentlichte er das Debüt von The Third Sound 2011 auf seinem Label, stellte zwei Jahre später sein Aufnahmestudio für den Nachfolger “The Third Sound of Destruction and Creation” zur Verfügung, und machte die Band mit der kanadischen Sängerin Tess Parks bekannt, die als neue Patti Smith gehandelt wird. Zusammen spielten sie das wunderbar-melancholische Duett “You are not here” für das aktuelle Album “Gospels of Degeneration” (Fuzz Club Records, 2016) ein. Keine schlechten Voraussetzungen für eine große Laufbahn.

3 Fragen an Hakon von The Third Sound

Deine Heimat Island ist ein beliebtes Reiseziel geworden. Aber dich hat es woanders hingezogen, nach Rom und jetzt Berlin…

Eigentlich bin ich sogar erst nach Prag gezogen, wo ich für einen Winter studiert habe und direkt danach nicht wieder nach Island gehen wollte. Wie viele Menschen, die in kleinen, isolierten Orten aufwachsen, brauchte ich Abwechslung. Ich spürte den Drang, neue Orte zu erkunden. Damals war ich mit einer Italienerin zusammen, deshalb fiel die nächste Wahl auf Rom. Dort begann ich erste Songs zu schreiben und aufzunehmen, was schlussendlich zum ersten Third Sound-Album führte. Ich hatte allerdings das Gefühl, nur langsam voranzukommen. Ich war schon ein paar Mal in Berlin, als ich mit der isländischen Band Singapore Sling tourte. Ich hatte dort auch einige Freunde. Berlin schien mir ein guter Ort, um mich auf meine kreative Arbeit zu konzentrieren. Also beschloss ich umzuziehen. Aber es ist immer noch schön, Island zu besuchen, auch wenn das Land inzwischen mit Touristen überfüllt ist.

Psych-Musik ist gerade ziemlich populär. Welche Bands haben deinen Sound beeinflusst? Und wie erklärst du dir den Trend?

Ich mag seit langem Psychedelic-Bands aus den 60er-Jahren wie The 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, Syd Barretts Pink Floyd, The Chocolate Watchband und einige andere. Sie haben mich inspiriert, vor allem am Anfang. Aber eigentlich fließt in mein Songwriting ein Mix aus verschiedenen Stilen und  Zeiten ein. Heutzutage, so scheint es, bezieht sich Psych auf Bands, die sich kaum von einander unterscheiden lassen. Sie klingen gleich und schreiben ähnliche Songs. Ob wir zu dieser Szene dazu gerechnet werden oder nicht, interessiert uns nicht. Wir machen weiter unsere Musik und gehen für jedes Album in eine neue Richtung.

Dieses Jahr feiert das Fever Creek Festival seinen 5. Geburtstag. Was sind deine besten Geburtstagserinnerungen?

Ich mag die Geburtstage von anderen mehr als meine eigenen. Die besten sind die, die man mit einer Handvoll toller Menschen, gutem Essen und ein paar Drinks verbringt.

Hakon Aðalsteinsson founded this solo project in 2010 in Rome and with his relocation to Berlin it blossomed again. Since then the Icelander is joined by four other musicians, that get their inspiration for The Third Sound from the character of the capital: Light and darkness, dream and reality, Pop and Psych blend in hypnotic soundscapes, bound together by Hakons dark voice.

The ex-member of Singapore Sling also found a supporter in Berlin: the 50-year-old Anton Newcombe. The American producer and creator of the band The Brian Jonestown Massacre is considered to be a pioneer of the new Psych sound. He also moved to Berlin some time ago. Here he released the debut of The Third Sound on his own label in 2011. Two years later he gave them his recording studio for the production of the follow-up album “The Third Sound of Destruction and Creation”. He also introduced them to the Canadian singer Tess Parks, that is described as the new Patti Smith. They teamed up for the wonderfully melancholic duet “You are not here”, to be heard on the current record “Gospels of Degeneration” (Fuzz Club Records, 2016). Not a bad prerequisite for a great future.

3 questions to Hakon from The Third Sound

Nowadays, Iceland is a very popular holiday destination. But you left your homeland to move to Rome and later to Berlin…

Actually I first moved to Prague where I was studying for one winter and did not feel like going straight back to Iceland afterwards. Like many people that grow up in small isolated places I needed to see something different. At that time I was together with an Italian girl so Rome became my next destination. It was there I started writing and recording the songs that ended up becoming the first Third Sound album. But I found it hard to get things done there. I had been to Berlin few times while I was touring with the Icelandic band Singapore Sling and I also had some friends living there. The city gave me the impression it would be a good place to focus on my creative work so I decided to move. But it is still nice to visit Iceland, even if the country is over crowded with tourists these days.

Psych music became quite popular, too. What are your main influences? And how do you explain the trend?

I have liked some 60’s psychedelic bands for a long time, like the 13th Floor elevators, The Seeds, Syd Barrett’s Pink Floyd, The Chocolate Watchband and few others. They were in some way an influence, especially in the beginning, but my influences have always been a mix of different styles and from different eras that bleed in to my own way of songwriting. What is referred to as Psych today seems to me to be more about bands that are using the same sounds and writing similar songs. Wether we are considered part of that scene or not doesn’t really concern us, we just go on making music in our own way and bring things to a different place every time we make a record.

This year, The Fever Creek Festivals celebrates its 5th birthday. What is your best birthday memory?

I often like other people’s birthdays better than my own. The best ones are usually spent with few good people, having a good meal and few drinks.
