KéPA plays the Blues and skates the streets

Sein Leben ist gut, sagt der baskische Sänger KéPA. Dennoch spielt er den Blues. Ihm gefällt die Reduktion auf eine Stimme, eine Gitarre. Dieser Tradition bleibt er treu, aber mit eigenem Stil. Er verleiht dem traurigsten aller Musikgenres eine positivere Grundstimmung. In Liedern wie “No Goat Cheese” oder “Hello Babe” mischen sich Freude und Aufbruchsstimmung, nicht zuletzt durch das kraftvolle und treibende Spiel: KéPA zupft und slidet die Gitarre, stampft mit den Füßen, bläst in die Mundharmonika. Als Folk Resophonic bezeichnet der Franzose auch seinen Sound. Seine silbern glänzende Gitarre ist eine Resophonic. Sie stammt aus den 30er-Jahren und ist die erste Gitarre mit elektronischer Verstärkung. Mit dem Kauf dieses Instruments begann auch der ernsthafte Anlauf, Musiker zu werden. Einige Jahre zuvor brachte er sich bereits das Singen und Gitarre spielen bei. Und er gab sich ein Pseudonym, den Namen seines Großvaters.

Eigentlich und immer noch ist KéPA Profi-Skateboarder. Unter seinem bürgerlichen Namen Bastien Duverdier nimmt er seit acht Jahren an internationalen Wettbewerben teil und fährt über unwegsame Gelände, von Frankreich bis Burma. Mittlerweile sind Musik und Skateboarding gleich wichtig. Nach zwei EPs und vereinzelten Gigs in Europa tourt KéPA diesen Sommer ausgiebig durch Frankreich, bevor er einen Stopp in Berlin beim Fever Creek Festival einlegt. Die Musiklaufbahn kommt in Fahrt. Es gibt also wirklich keinen Grund, traurig zu sein.

He is just fine, says the Basque Singer KéPA. However, he plays the Blues. He likes the reduction on one voice, one guitar. He sticks to this tradition but with his own style. KéPA gives the saddest genre of music a more positive undertone. In songs like “No Goat Cheese” or “Hello Babe” joy is mixed with the spirit of optimism, partly due to his vigorous and impelling way of playing: KéPA plucks and slides on his guitar, stomps his feet, plays the harmonica. He calls his sound Folk Resophonic. His silver shimmering guitar is a Resophonic, build in the 30s and it was the first guitar with an electronic amplifier. With the purchase of this instrument he started his first serious attempt to become a musician. Just a few years before, he taught himself how to sing and how to play the guitar. And he gave himself a pseudonym: the name of his grandfather.

KéPA is actually and still a professional skateboarder. Since eight years he is participating under his real name Bastien Duverdier in international competitions and is skateboarding over rough terrain from France to Burma. Meanwhile, music and skateboarding became equally important. After two EPs and several gigs in Europe, KéPA is going on an extended tour in France this summer before he is making a stop in Berlin at the Fever Creek Festival. His musical path is unstoppable. So there is absolutely no reason to be sad.
