Hier kommt Teil zwei der Review zum Fever Creek Pop-up Record Store. Auch dieses Mal stellen wir euch die neuen Veröffentlichungen von Künstlern vor, die beim Fever Creek Festival aufgetreten sind. Heute in der Review The Bribe and the Mockery, Skiing und KéPA.

Welcome to the second part of our review of the Fever Creek Pop-up Record Store. Again, we are going to present you new releases of artists that played at the Fever Creek Festival. Today are The Bribe and the Mockery, Skiing and KéPA part of the review.

Skiing – The Diary of a Rotary Phone

Eine Band der ersten Stunde ist Skiing. Beim Fever Creek Festival 2013 zeigte die Gruppe um den Sänger Everett Darling eine rasende Show zwischen Punk, Queercore und 50-er Jahre Rock ‘n’ Roll. Im Dezember 2014 kam ihr jüngstes Album “The Diary of a Rotary Phone” heraus. Skiing gehen den nächsten Schritt als Populärmusiker. Was früher jugendliche Revolte war, ist heute differenzierter und vielfältiger. Dabei ist die hohe Kunst der Popmusik Komplexes so auszudrücken, als wäre es das natürlichste der Welt. Das gelingt der Band auf wunderbare Weise. Wer das Album hört, kann sich fallen lassen und gemeinsam mit Skiing davon schweben.

Skiing is a band of the first hour. At the Fever Creek Festival in 2013 the group around singer Everett Darling played a raving show in-between Punk, Queercore and 50’s Rock’n’Roll. In December 2014 they put their new album “The Diary of a Rotary Phone” on the market and Skiing are going the next step as popular artists. What used to be a juvenile revolt, is nowadays more nuanced and diverse. Thereby the noble art of pop music is to express the complex as being the most natural thing in the world. This is accomplished by the band in a wonderful manner. Whoever listens to Skiing’s record can loose oneself and drift away.

The Bribe and the Mockery – Barely Poignant

The Bribe and the Mockery ist auch eine der ersten Bands, die wir für das Fever Creek Festival gewinnen konnten. Die beiden Musiker begeistern mit Anti-Folk zwischen verspielt und nachdenklich, analog und digital. Casio, Gesang und Gitarre – mehr braucht ihre Musik nicht. Anfang 2015 veröffentlichten sie die Barely Poignant EP auf Kassette. Der Song “How to catch a bird“ wurde als alternativer Soundtrack für den gleichnamigen Kurzfilm von Vera van Wolferen komponiert und auf dem Interfilm Kurzfilmfestival vorgespielt. Anti-Folk goes Filmmusik – Adam Green wäre begeistert.

The Bribe and the Mockery was one of the first bands that we could win over to play at the first Fever Creek Festival in 2013. The duo enthuses with Anti-Folk somewhere between playful and thoughtful, analogue and digital. Casio, vocals and a guitar – more is not needed. At the beginning of 2015 they released the Barely Poignant EP on tape. The song “How to catch a bird” was composed as an alternative soundtrack for the likewise named short film by Vera can Wolferen and was played live at the Interfilm short movie festival. Anti-Folk goes film music – Adam Green would delighted.

KéPA – Low-Low Wind

Das Gute braucht oft nicht viel. Gesang, Gitarre und Mundharmonika – so begeisterte KéPA als One Man Blues-Band auf dem Fever Creek Festival 2014. Im Februar 2015 veröffentlichte Bastien Duverdier, wie er mit bürgerlichem Namen heißt, sein neues Album “Low-Low Wind“. Und dass der Blues das Leben spiegelt, zeigt er auf dem Album mit Bravour: Freude und Aufbruchsstimmung klingen immer wieder durch, egal wie schwer es das Leben mit einem meint. Das kraftvolle und treibende Spiel, der besondere Sound seiner Resophonic-Gitarre und sein virtuoses Mundharmonikaspiel prägen die Songs. “A Challenge to the Dark“ startet beispielsweise mit dem Aufheulen der Mundharmonika, danach ein lässiger Anschlag zweier Akkorde, bevor das Lied richtig an Fahrt aufnimmt. Gesang setzt ein. Das Spiel steigert sich immer mehr und mündet im Refrain. Danach kurz Luft holen und im Grande Finale mit Mundharmonika und schnellem Gitarrenspiel noch einmal alles geben. Wer sich ins Leben stürzen möchte, bekommt mit dem Album die volle Ladung.

It does not take much to make good music. Vocals, guitar and a harmonica – this is how KéPA captivated the audience as a One Man Blues Band at the Fever Creek Festival in 2014. In February 2015 Bastien Duverdier, his real name, released the new record “Low-Low Wind”. On this he shows that Blues is life. It doesn’t matter how difficult life can be, he spreads the spirit of optimism and delight. The vigorous and impelling play, the unique sound of the resophonic guitar and his virtuosic play with the harmonica shape the songs. “A Challenge to the Dark” starts for example with the roar of the harmonica, then the casual strumming of two accords before the song picks up speed. Vocals start. The play increases more and more and concludes in the refrain. A short moment to take a breath follows before the song ends in the grand finale with harmonica and fast guitar play where KéPA gives everything. Whoever wants to throw themselves right into life, gets with the record the full dose.

Wir tanzen im Viereck! Party with Go, Dard and Nomouth-DJ Team

Wenn das Bühnenlicht ausgeht, startet die Party. Auch dieses Jahr legen auf dem Fever Creek Festival spannende DJs auf. Das Pult teilen sich Go, Dard und das Nomouth-DJ Team.

Nomouth sind Bastian Stein und Marcus Mocydlarz der Berliner Band I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Als DJs spielen sie Postpunk, Shoegaze, Wave sowie die neuesten Hits aus der gegenwärtigen Berliner Musikszene. Befreundete Künstler wie Jolly Goods, The History of Colour TV, Hans Unstern, BraBraBra und Skiing gehören zu den Lieblingsbands und sind fester Bestandteil des Repertoires. Als Mitglieder von I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream haben sie gerade ihr erstes Album fertiggestellt, welches voraussichtlich im Herbst erscheint.

Go, Dard stammt aus Dresden. Dahinter steht Falk, der seit 2007 die Menschen zum Tanzen bringt, vorwiegend in der Dresdner Zille, wo einmal im Monat seine Reihe “Have Love Will Dance” stattfindet. Dass Go, Dard eigentlich Kunstgeschichte studiert hat, lässt sich an seinem Namen ablesen, der an den französischen Regisseur Jean-Luc Godard erinnert. Auf seiner Playlist finden sich Raritäten und Neuheiten des 60s Beat, Garage, Rock, Soul und Blues, von Martha & The Vandellas bis The Black Keys.

Die Party beginnt um 1:00h. Der Eintritt kostet 3 Euro.

When the stage lights are turned off, the party starts. Like in the last year, the Fever Creek Festival will again present thrilling DJ’s. The DJ-desk will be shared among Go, Dard and the Nomouth-DJ Team.

Nomouth are Bastian Stein and Marcus Mocydlarz of the Berlin based Band I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. As DJ’s they will present Postpunk, Shoegaze, Wave as well as new songs by the contemporary music scene of Berlin. Befriended musicians like Jolly Goods, The History of Colour TV, Hans Unstern, BraBraBra and Skiing are their favorite bands and are an inherent part of their repertoire. With their band I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream they just finished their first record which will expectedly released in autumn.

Go, Dard is from Dresden. Behind it stands Falk, who makes people dance since 2007, mainly at the Dresdner Zille where once a month his series “Have Love Will Dance” is taking place. That Go, Dard is a student of art history can be seen in his name which brings the French director Jean-Luc Godard to mind. On his playlist are rarities as well as novelties of 60s Beat, Garage, Rock, Soul and Blues- from Martha & The Vandellas to The Black Keys.

The party starts at 1 am. The entry fee will be 3 Euro.

Alte Liebe rostet nicht, in unserem Fall zur Kassette. Der treuen Weggefährtin aus analogen Schulzeiten kann man in Kürze auf dem Fever Creek Festival wieder begegnen: Wir haben ein Mixtape zusammengestellt mit ein bis zwei Liedern von Künstlern, die auf dem Festival bereits spielten oder dieses Jahr noch auftreten werden.* Das Beste daran: Wir schenken euch den Sampler! Ihr müsst dazu nur folgendes machen:

1. Eine Kassette bis zum 10. August an folgende Adresse schicken: Fever Creek Festival, Freienwalder Straße 8, 13359 Berlin
2. Warten, während wir die Kassette in liebevoller Handarbeit bespielen und gestalten.
3. Das fertige Mixtape am 30. August ab 20h in der Festivallocation – Marie Antoinette in Berlin – abholen. (Wichtig: Die Teilnahme an der Aktion ist kein Ticketkauf. Die Kassette kann auch abgeholt werden, wenn man kein Ticket kauft.)

The loyal companion of our analog school days can be encountered at the Fever Creek Festival in a few weeks: We produced a mixtape with 1 or 2 songs of artists that already played at the festival or will be performing this year. * The good thing about it: We give you the sampler as a gift! 1. Send us a cassette until the 10th of August to this address: Fever Creek Festival, Freienwalder Straße 8, 13359 Berlin
2. Wait, while we record the sampler on your tape and customize the booklet.
3. The final mixtape can be picked up on the 30th of August at the Marie Antoinette – the festival location- starting at 8 pm. (Notice: Participating in the action is not a ticket purchase. When you do not want to buy a ticket, you are free to pick up the cassette.)

Music made in Berlin: “Lokalmatadore” on Soundcloud

Viele kommen, viele gehen, aber genauso viele bleiben: Berlin zieht seit jeher Musiker aus aller Welt an. In den 60ern ließ sich Garage-Ikone Iggy Pop für eine kurze, aber intensive Zeit in der Hauptstadt nieder. Seit den frühen 2000ern besteht eine enge Verbindung zu der Anti Folk-Community in New York. Künstler wie Toby Goodshank und Jeffrey Lewis (Foto: rechts außen) besuchen immer wieder die Stadt, um mit Freunden zu musizieren. Aber auch einheimische Bands wie Chuckamuck wollen so schnell nicht weg von hier. Berlin geht die Musik scheinbar nie aus!

Vieles davon erreicht jedoch nur wenige Ohren. Das finden wir schade und haben uns deshalb den Soundcloud-Sampler “Lokalmatadore” ausgedacht mit aufstrebenden Talenten, die in Berlin leben und wirken. Dabei gilt das Festivalmotto: “From Folk to Garage”. Mit dabei sind unter anderem das neuseeländische Folk-Pärchen Charity Children, die All Girl Garage Band Canyon Spree und der Singer/Songwriter Vincent Long. Der Eröffnungssong “I wanna be your cat” von Das Ekzem erinnert übrigens an ein Stück des einstigen Wahlberliners Iggy Pop. So schließt sich der Kreis, wa. Viel Spaß beim Anhören (und Entdecken)! Many stop by, many leave, but some stay. Berlin has always attracted musicians from all over the world. In den 60s Garage icon Iggy Pop settled in the capital. Since the early 2000s there is a close connection to the Anti Folk community in New York. Artists like Toby Goodshank and Jeffrey Lewis (picture: right corner) repeatedly visit the city in order to play with friends. Also local acts like Chuckamuck enjoy the life here. It seems that Berlin is never running out of musicians!

However a lot of this music doesn’t get the attention it deserves. “What a shame!” we thought and we came up with the Soundcloud sampler “Lokalmatadore” (“local heros”). We composed a set connected to our slogan “From Folk to Garage” with new artists that are living and working in Berlin. The New Zealand Folk couple Charity Children, the all girl Garage band Canyon Spree and the singer/songwriter Vincent Long are among other artists. The opener “I wanna be your cat” by Das Ekzem by the way reminds of a music piece of the former Berliner-by-choice Iggy Pop. And so the circle is complete. Have fun while listening (and discovering)! Line-up 2014: KéPA from France

Yuhey, unser Line-up nimmt schöne Formen an. Das wollen wir ab heute auch mit euch teilen. Der erste von fünf Acts ist KéPA. Der Franzose gehört mit zwei veröffentlichten EPs zu den Newcomern der internationalen Bluesszene. Seine Markenzeichen: eine silberne Resophonic-Gitarre und eine positive Lebenseinstellung. Neben der Musik lebt KéPA unter seinem bürgerlichen Namen Bastien Duverdier seine zweite Passion aus: Seit acht Jahren ist er Profi-Skateboarder. Erfahrt mehr im Porträt mit Hörbeispielen.

Hooray, our line-up is taking shape. Today we want to give you a little insight into it. The first of five acts is KéPA. The French artist is with his two EPs amongst the newcomers of the international Blues scene. His trademarks: a silver shimmering Resophonic guitar and a spirit of optimism. But Music isn’t KéPA’s only passion. Since eight years he is a pro-skateboarder, well known under his real name Bastien Duverdier. Read more in our portrait including audio samples.

Wir kehren zurück! Nach der gelungenen Auftaktveranstaltung Ende August und eurem positiven Feedback wird das Fever Creek Festival am 1. März 2014 einen besonderen Abend veranstalten – ein Intermezzo! Mit dem Zwischenspiel wollen wir euch die Wartezeit auf das zweitägige Hauptfestival im Sommer verkürzen. Eine Sparversion ersparen wir euch aber. Wir gehen wieder in die Vollen und präsentieren drei Acts der nationalen und internationalen Musikszene. Welche das genau sind, geben wir demnächst bekannt. Erstmal wünschen wir euch eine schöne Weihnachtszeit und Sylvesternacht!

We’re back! After the successful premiere at the end of august and your positive feedback the Fever Creek Festival continues its work and arranges a special evening on March 1st in 2014 – a so-called Intermezzo! The interlude is supposed to shorten your waiting time until the 2-day main event in summer. The quality will stay the same. Again, we go flat out and present three acts from the national and international music scene. Their names will be announced soon. For the time being, we wish you a nice Christmas and New Year’s Eve!

Ab sofort posten wir jeden Freitag einen Song auf Facebook, der euer Denken verändern wird – nicht mehr und nicht weniger. (english version below)

Unter dem Titel “Can’t stop listening to this song” könnt ihr bislang drei großartige Lieder entdecken. Sie treffen unmittelbar und nachhaltig in Herz und Kopf. Den Auftakt macht Neil Youngs “Hey Hey, My My” mit einer der schönsten Zeilen in der Musikgeschichte: “Rock’n’Roll never dies!” Der zweite Song kommt von Elvis Presley, dessen Rock’n’Roll bis heute zahlreiche Musiker beeinflusst, auch Neil Young. Rund 750 Aufnahmen existieren vom King. Wir präsentieren “Ghost Riders in the Sky”, eine seltene Demoversion aus dem Jahr 1970. Im dazugehörigen Video jammt Elvis Presley mit seiner Band im Studio. Die extravaganten Las Vegas-Bühnenoutfits hat er dafür abgelegt. Stattdessen trägt man schlichtes Polyester. Was hier zählt, ist allein die Musik. Erste Frau in unserer Reihe ist Nina Simone mit dem vielfach interpretierten “Strange Fruit”. Der Protestsong – im Original von Billie Holiday gesungen – erschien Mitte der 60er-Jahre auf dem Höhepunkt der amerikanischen Bürgerrechtsbewegung und lässt die Greultaten gegen Afroamerikaner zur Zeit der Lynchjustiz aufleben: “Blood on the leaves and blood at the root / Black body swinging in the Southern breeze / Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.” Nina Simones Version ist auch in 2013 aktuell als Sample in Kayne Wests Song “Blood on the Leaves”.

From now on every friday we present you one song on facebook that will change your mind – no more, no less. Under the title “can’t stop listening to this song” you find already three brillant songs. They’re going straight to heart and mind and will stay there for a long time.

First choice is Neil Young’s “Hey Hey, My My” with one of the most beautiful lyrics in music history: “Rock’n’Roll never dies!” The follow-up comes from Elvis Presley who’s Rock’n’Roll influences many musicians till this day, among others Neil Young. The King’s discography includes more than 750 recordings. We selected “Ghost Riders in the Sky”, a very rare demo version from 1970. In the accompanying video you see Elvis Presley jamming with his band at a studio. Therefor he took off his extravagant Las Vegas outfits and changed into something simple – his music is the only thing that matters here. First female singer of our special is Nina Simone with her version of “Strange Fruit”. The multiple covered protest song – originally sung by Billie Holiday – aired in the mid-1960s at the peak of the american civil rights movement. It deals with the horrors of lynching carried out against African Americans: “Blood on the leaves and blood at the root / Black body swinging in the Southern breeze / Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.” Even in 2013 Nina Simone’s Version is still vivid. Kayne West did sampled it for his song “Blood on the Leaves”.
