Trinidad Doherty is rooted in Indie Folk, and never afraid to experiment with other sounds

Alles andere als eine weitere Musikerin an der Gitarrre! Ähnlich wie Emmy the Great oder Peggy Sue mischt Trinidad Doherty das Folk-Genre neu auf. Die junge Singer-Songwriterin verbindet beatlastigen Alternative Rock mit melodischem Indie Folk, bluesiges Fingerpicking mit poppigem Gesang. Dabei ist sie auch von den Klängen ihrer chilenischen Heimat inspiriert. Diese verließ sie 2012 mit gerade einmal 18 Jahren, um sich in neue Abenteuer zu stürzen.
Die Weltenbummlerin wählte Berlin als ihre kreative Mitte. Hier arbeitet sie an neuen Songs und Projekten. Unter anderem gründete sie vor rund einem Jahr ein Duo mit der Musikerin Johanna Amelie. Das Besondere: Sie spielen sowohl eigene Lieder als auch die der Anderen, weshalb ihre EP den Namen “Mutual Songs” trägt. Als Duo traten sie damit auf dem diesjährigen Melodica Festival in Paris und Island auf. Das Solo-Projekt steht währenddessen nicht still. Nach Fertigstellung des Musikvideos zu “The First” (siehe unten) und der in 2014 veröffentlichten Live-EP steht dieses Jahr das erste eigene Album auf dem Plan!

Wann hast du angefangen, Musik zu machen?
Seit ich sieben bin, spiele ich Gitarre. Das Songschreiben kam mit ungefähr 15 Jahren dazu. Es war nicht wirklich gut, aber ein Anfang. Den Gitarrenunterricht hatte ich damals in der Schule. Ich war an einer Waldorfschule, was alles etwas entspannter gemacht hat. Ich war weniger an der Theorie interessiert als am Spielen. Und so jammte ich im Endeffekt die meiste Zeit mit meinen Lehrern.
Worum geht es hauptsächlich in deinen Liedern?
In den frühen Songs ging es vor allem um die Liebe. Meistens Momente des Herzschmerz‘. Du weißt schon, die Teenager-Zeit. Aber vieles, was ich später geschrieben habe, entstand aus dem Moment heraus. Manchmal verstehe ich erst später, was ich damit sagen wollte, manchmal aber auch gar nicht, und es braucht noch mehr Zeit. Die neuen Lieder erzählen von den Dingen, die in der Welt vor sich gehen, aber mit einem sehr persönlichen Bezug.
Wie sieht der Prozess des Schreibens bei dir genau aus?
In der Regel will ich einen Moment einfangen, am besten gleich und sofort. Ansonsten würde ich ihn verlieren. Für mich ist es schwierig, mich an inspirierende Erlebnisse zurück zu erinnern und später darüber zu schreiben.
Gibt es auch Künstler, die dich inspirieren?
Ich höre sehr unterschiedliche Musik, aber wenn es um meinen musikalischen Einfluss geht, dann würde ich The Tallest Man on Earth, Los Espiritus, Peggy Sue, Shannon Wright, Timber Timbre und Camila Moreno nennen. Sie beeinflussen nicht direkt meinen Sound, aber sie haben mich zu einer bestimmten Zeit meines Lebens geprägt.
Was steht als nächstes bei dir an?
In Berlin bleiben, mein erstes Album noch dieses Jahr veröffentlichen und danach mein zweites. Ich spiele außerdem seit kurzem in einer neuen Band, worüber ich wirklich glücklich bin, dabei zu sein. Ich will einfach viel Musik machen und Orte besuchen, die ich noch nicht gesehen habe. Abenteuer halt!

Anything but another musician with a guitar! Trinidad Doherty stirs up the genre of Folk similar to Emmy the Great or Peggy Sue. The young Singer-Songwriter combines beatdriven Alternative Rock with melodic Indie Folk, bluesy Fingerpicking with Pop-like singing. She is thereby inspired by the sounds of her home: Chile. She left her familiar setting in 2012 with only being 18 years old to start a new adventure.
The globetrotter choose Berlin as her creative middle. Here she works on new songs and projects. One of these is the duo with the musician Johanna Amelie, founded around a year ago. The remarkable thing about the duo: They play their own songs but also the songs of the other, that’s why their EP is called “Mutual Songs”. Together they performed at the Melodica Festival in Paris and in Iceland this year. Her solo project is also still on. After finishing the music video for the song “The First” (above) and the Live-EP that was released in 2014, the plan for this year is the production of the first record!

When did you start to make music?
I started playing guitar when I was around 7 years, but I started writing music around 15. Nothing good, but it was a start. I had my guitar lessons at school, which was a Waldorf school so it was a bit more relaxed. I wasn’t so interested in learning the theory, I just wanted to play. So in the end I used to just jam with my teachers most of the time.
What are your songs mainly about?
Love, especially the earlier ones. Heartbreaking moments most of the time. You know, teenage moments. But a lot of what I wrote later is something that I “vomite’ at the moment and after some time I can understand what was I trying to say, or sometimes not and it takes longer. The last songs that I’ve written talk a little bit more about all this things happening in the world, but in a very deep personal way.
How does your songwriting process looks like?
It’s mainly a short moment that I want to catch right when it happens. Otherwise I’ll loose it. For me it’s difficult to go back to that kind of inspiration and continue writing what I started.
Do you also get inspired by other musicians?
I usually hear a lot of different kinds of music, but talking about musical inspiration I would say that The Tallest Man on Earth, Los Espiritus, Peggy Sue, Shannon Wright, Timber Timbre and Camila Moreno have been a big influence. Maybe not directly of what I sound like, but they have inspired me a lot, coming along any experience that I’m having at the time.
What’s next for you?
I want to stay in Berlin for a couple of more years, release my first album by the end of this year, then my second album. I’m also part of an other band that is just starting and that I’m really happy to be part of. Besides that, work a lot and try to see places that I haven’t seen before. You know, adventure!
