Pacific Swell is a Denmark-based reincarnation of the early Growlers

Nicht jede gute dänische Band kommt automatisch aus Kopenhagen. Fernab der pulsierenden Hauptstadt im Küstenstädtchen Grenaa leben die Newcomer Pacific Swell. Dahinter stehen Daniel, Nicklas, Emil und Adam, die am liebsten surfen, durch die Welt reisen und Musik machen. Wie die Vier leben, so spielen sie auch: lässig, abenteuerlustig, sich nicht zu ernst nehmend. Ihr Vorbild ist kaum zu überhören: die kalifornische Band The Growlers und ihr neu erfundenes Genre Beach Goth. In Songs wie “Doctor Love” (2017) und “Clean Gypsies” (2016) vermischen auch Pacific Swell Surf und Garage, Indiepop und Country, Psychedelic und Retro-Rock.
Ob in bunten Mariachi-Outfits gekleidet oder in luftigen Kimonos, die Konzerte der Vier versprechen immer eine gute Zeit. Sänger Emil über ihren bis dato größten Gig im Chateau Motel in Kopenhagen: “Es war ein großartiger Vibe. Wir waren vielleicht etwas zu betrunken, und unsere Kimonos etwas zu offenherzig, aber wir hatten Spaß – und die Leute auch!” Bei allem Spaß kommt die Arbeit nicht zur kurz. Diesen Sommer soll die erste EP erscheinen.

Wie lange macht ihr schon Musik?
Gegründet haben wir Pacific Swell direkt nach der High School. Aber auch davor spielten wir in Bands, wobei Adam schon immer das Textschreiben liebte. Lustiger Weise ist keiner von uns in musikalischen Haushalten aufgewachsen. Unsere Eltern beherrschen keine Instrumente, oder wenn doch, dann eher schlecht als recht.
Worum drehen sich die Texte?
So abgegriffen, wie es klingt, drehen sich alle Songs um unser Leben. Sie handeln von bestimmten Erlebnissen, die sich in unsere Erinnerungen eingebrannt haben, ob gut oder schlecht.
Reisen gehört zu euren Leidenschaften. Bleibt da genügend Zeit fürs gemeinsame Proben und Aufnehmen?
Die Zeit, in der wir getrennt sind, ist eine sehr kreative Zeit. Wir kommen mit einem Koffer voll Songs zurück, fast schon zu viele, um sie alle umzusetzen – das treibt uns voran. Adam sucht sich Surfspots in der Welt. So bleibt ihm viel Zeit zum Entspannen und Songschreiben zwischen den Sessions. Daniel taucht und segelt mit seinem Boot auf den Weltmeeren. Emil trampt viel durch Europa, und Nicklas ist für eine gewisse Zeit in Kalifornien gewesen. Wenn wir alle daheim sind, können wir es kaum erwarten, uns wieder zu sehen. Die Freude ist so groß, dass wir viele Dinge so schnell wie möglich machen wollen.
Wie wichtig ist Musik in eurem Leben?
Musik begleitet uns jede Minute, in der wir wach sind. Wenn wir nicht spielen, legen wir Platten auf oder drücken bei Spotify auf Play.

Not every good Danish band is automatically from Copenhagen. The Newcomer Pacific Swell are living in the coastal town Grenaa far away from the vibrant capital. The band is formed by Daniel, Nicklas, Emil and Adam, who like to surf, travel around the world and make music. Their way of living reflects in their style of playing: laid-back, adventurous, not taking themselves too seriously. The role model cannot be overheard: the Californian Band The Growlers and their newly invented genre Beach Goth. In songs like “Doctor Love” (2017) and “Clean Gypsies” (2016) Pacific Swell are blending Surf with Garage, Indiepop with Country, Psychedelic with Retro-Rock.
Sometimes dressed in colourful mariachi outfits, other times wrapped in airy kimonos, the concerts of these four are always fun and unpredictable. Singer Emil about their so far biggest gig in the Chateau Motel in Copenhagen: “It had a great vibe. We might have been too drunk, and our kimonos might have been too open. But we enjoyed it and the audience as well.” Despite all the fun, work is still on. The first EP is planned to come out this summer.

How long have you been making music?
We founded the band after High School but we have been playing music since forever. Adam especially have been writing more music rather than learning how to play the killer solos. But the funny thing is, none of us grew up in homes where any of our parents played an instrument. Or at least not very well.
What are your songs mainly about?
As cliché as it sounds, all the songs are about our lives. They deal with certain episodes that have made a mark on our memory, good or bad.
One of your favorite things to do is to travel. Your time to record and write music seems limited. How do you manage to get creative as a band?
The time apart is a creative onee. We come home with a bag full of songs, more than we have time to finish, and that keeps the drive going. Adam travels because of surfing, which in most cases gives him a lot of time to just relax and write some songs in between sessions. Daniel sails around in his boat and dives. Emil hitch-hikes a lot. And Nicklas has gone to California. When we are home we can’t wait to see each other again and want do a lot of things really quick.
How important is music in your life?
Music pretty much takes every waking minute of our time. When we are not playing, we are flipping discs or pressing the play button on Spotify…
