Berlin ist ein Schmelztiegel für Musiker aus aller Welt. Man denke an die gemeinsamen Jahre von David Bowie und Iggy Pop. Auch heute finden in der Hauptstadt noch die spannendsten Begegnungen statt. Eine davon führte zur Gründung von HEKLA mit Teresia, Elsa, Constanze, Tom und Till aus Schweden, Australien und Deutschland.

HEKLAs Sound ist vielschichtig, dramatisch und unterhaltsam. In Songs wie “Stella” und “Dirty Harry” trifft luftiger Schweden-Folk auf knarrzigen Garage Rock und verspielte 80er-Jahre-Synthesizer. Dazu singen die Frontfrauen Teresia und Elsa leidenschaftlich und im Chor über Liebe und andere Obsessionen. Zuhörer bekommen unweigerlich gute Laune, wenn sie sich die Band live oder auf dem im März erschienenen Debüt-Album anhören.

3 Fragen an HEKLA

Ihr habt euch nach einem der aktivsten Vulkane Islands benannt. Warum?

Wir waren es leid, dass nur langweilige Vulkane wie der Vesuv die ganze Aufmerksamkeit erhalten, und dachten uns, dass es an der Zeit wäre, den mächtigen Hekla ins Rampenlicht zu rücken. Ein Teil von uns, Till, Teresia und Elsa, waren diesen Mai sogar zu Besuch da. Doch Hekla hat sich vor uns versteckt. Als wir dem Vulkan näher kamen, zog ein riesiger Sturm auf. Darauf hin wurden alle Straßen in dieser magischen, unwirklichen Landschaft gesperrt.

Seit eurer Gründung 2011 gab es einige Veränderungen innerhalb der Band. Wann kamen Constanze und Tom dazu? Und was veränderte sich dadurch musikalisch?

Eigentlich gibt es HEKLA in der heutigen Form nicht seit 2011. Aber wir spielen seitdem in verschiedenen Formationen zusammen. HEKLA wurde Anfang 2016 gegründet. Tom kam im März des gleichen Jahres dazu, Connie im Januar 2017. Wir alle lieben es, Connie beim Klavierspielen zuzuhören. Sie ist wie ein Oktopus an der Orgel, Organelle und Bass-Station. Und wir lieben es, Toms lässigem Gitarrenspiel zu lauschen. Er liebt das Vibrato-System an seiner neuen Fender Jaguar. Neben unserem gemeinsam eingespielten Debüt-Album präsentieren wir vier neue Songs auf dem Fever Creek Festival. Euch erwarten verwunschene Doom Pop-Hits über die längsten Boulevards, rot anlaufende Krähen und Schwestern am Strand.

Dieses Jahr feiern wir unseren 5. Geburtstag. Was sind eure schönsten Geburtstagsmomente?

Als diese Stars an unseren Geburtstagen geboren wurden und unsere Traumband gründeten: David Bowie, Dwight Yoakam, Dorothy Parker, Alfred Nobel (BOOM!) und… Trommelwirbel… Marie Antoinette! “Get your coat quick / And leave everything else / – Bowie? / – Yeah? / You wouldn’t have let me go, would you?” – They Live by Night (1948)

Berlin is a melting pot for musicians from all over the world. Just think about the times that David Bowie and Iggy Pop spent together. In today’s capital there are still exciting encounters. One of those turned into the foundation of HEKLA with Teresia, Elsa, Constanze, Tom und Till from Sweden, Australia and Germany.

The sound of HEKLA is complex, dramatic and entertaining. In songs like “Stella” and “Dirty Harry” airy Swedish Folk meets with rough Garage Rock and playful 80s synthesizer. To this sound the lead vocalists Teresia and Elsa are singing passionately in a choir about love and other obsessions. The audience has an inevitable good mood when listening to this band live or to their debut record that was released in May.

3 questions to HEKLA

You named yourself after one of the most active vulcanoes in Iceland. Why is that?

We were tired of all the attention that lame volcanoes like Vesuvio got, and thought it was time to bring the powerful Hekla into the spotlight. Till, Teresia and Elsa were in Iceland this May. But Hekla wouldn’t let us see her. We tried to reach her but as we got closer there was a big storm and every road was shut down in that magical outer space landscape.

Since your foundation in 2011 there were some changes in the band formation. When did Constanze and Tom joined the team? And what changed in the sound?

We have actually not been HEKLA all the way since 2011 but did play in different constellations together since then. HEKLA was formed in the beginning of 2016, and Tom joined us in March that year, and Connie in January 2017. We all love to hear our Connie on the keys. She’s like an octopus on the organ, organelle and bass station. We also love Tom’s airy twangy guitar. He likes that whammy bar on his new Fender Jaguar. Apart from our self-titled debut album we have four neeeew songs to play for you at Fever Creek Festival. Expect some doomy hits with haunted lyrics about the longest boulevards, blushing crows and sisters on the beach.

This year, The Fever Creek Festival celebrates its 5th birthday, and we are looking forward to make nice memories. What is your best birthday memory ?

When these stars were born on our birthdays and formed our dream super band: David Bowie, Dwight Yoakam, Dorothy Parker, Alfred Nobel (BOOM!) and… drum roll… Marie Antoinette!
