Full Moon Fiasco are a New Zealand born space trip tape deck band and now part of the Berlin underground scene

Internationaler geht es kaum: Full Moon Fiasco bestehen aus vier Musikern von drei Kontinenten. Sänger Will kommt wie sein Mitstreiter Mitch an den Synths aus Neuseeland, Bassistin Jelena aus Kroatien, Schlagzeugerin Meghan aus Südafrika. Die Vier trafen sich im Berliner Nachtleben, dass sie seither mitgestalten. Vorzugsweise spielen sie in Szeneclubs wie Urban Spree und 8mm Bar, die mit abgerockten Fassaden und spärlicher Beleuchtung den perfekten Rahmen für ihren poetisch-psychedelischen Sound liefern.

Ursprünglich war Full Moon Fisco ein reines Studio-Projekt von Will, das er lange vor Berlin in seiner Heimatstadt Wellington gründete. Ihn inspirierten damals die Tape-Deck-Aufnahmen einheimischer Bands wie The Chills. 2010 erschien das Debütalbum “Cosmic Palms”, das die Wende brachte. Das Leben spielte sich immer mehr auf der Bühne ab, statt hinter verschlossenen Studiotüren. Nach einigen Wechseln in der Band bringt die neue Formation Ende 2016 das erste gemeinsame Album heraus. Es trägt den Namen „Summer Eyes“ und schlägt eine musikalische Brücke zwischen Berlin und Neuseeland, wo das Album zu gleichen Teilen aufgenommen wurde.

Du bist von Neuseeland nach Berlin gezogen. Was waren deine Erwartungen?

Ich bin eigentlich mit einer anderen Band, den Thought Creature, hier her gezogen. Meine Erwartungen hielten sich in Grenzen. Denn über die Stadt wusste ich nur wenig. Mir war eher das Berlin der 20er-Jahre aus Büchern vertraut.

Wie stark fühlst du dich mit deiner Heimat Wellington verbunden?

Die Landschaft und die Menschen Neuseelands werden immer einen Einfluss auf meine Musik haben. Ich glaube, meinem Bandfreund Mitch geht das genauso. Wir haben noch ein anderes Musikprojekt namens Golden Bay – eine Referenz an den gleichnamigen kleinen Ort auf der Südinsel Neuseelands.

Worum geht es in eurer Musik hauptsächlich?

Bedeutung ist uns nicht so wichtig. Wir lieben das Surreale und das Absurde.

Was macht dir neben der Musik am meisten Spaß?

Zeichnen ist schön, mit dem Fahrrad durch Berlin fahren oder im Wald spazieren gehen. Momentan gucke ich mit Jelena die Dragon Ball-Zeichentrickserie, von Anfang bis zum Ende – das wird ein wenig Zeit beanspruchen…

Wie sehen eure Zukunftspläne aus?

Im November sind wir auf Tour mit unseren Freunden von Voodoo Beach im November. Außerdem ist ein neues Album in der Mache mit dem Namen “New Twists in Turning”.

It can’t get more international: Full Moon Fiasco are formed by four musicians from three different continents. Singer Will is like Mitch, who plays the synths, from New Zealand, bass player Jelena is from Croatia, and Meghan, the drummer, from South Africa. The four met in the Berlin night scene, that they help to shape since then. You often meet them in underground clubs and bars like the Urban Spree and the 8mm Bar. With their rocked up facades and sparse lightning these locations have the perfect surrounding for the poetic psychedelic sound of Full Moon Fiasco.

At the beginning, Full Moon Fiasco was just a mere studio project of Will, that he formed way back in his home town Wellington. He was inspired by the tape-deck-recordings of local bands like The Chills. In 2010 the debut record “Cosmic Palms” was released which was a turning point. More often he played with various band members on stages rather than behind closed studio doors. After a few changes in the band, the new formation will bring out their first record in the end of 2016. It will be called “Summer Eyes” and spans a musical bridge between Berlin and New Zealand, where the LP was recorded.

You moved from New Zealand to Berlin. What were your expectations?

I moved here originally with another group called Thought Creature. I didn´t really have to many expections. I knew more about Berlin in the 20s than now as I studied that period. It was nice to not to have to many expectations.

Is New Zealand still playing a big part in your lives?

The landscape of New Zealand, the sea and the people, they will always inform the way I make music to some degree. I think Mitch is the same. We also have a project called Golden Bay, in part a reference to a little place in the Sothern Island of New Zealand.

What is your music mainly about?

Meaning isn’t of such a concern. I love surealism and the absurd.

What do you find the most fun apart from music?

Drawing is nice, I also really enjoy riding my bike arould Berlin and walking in the forest. Recently Jelena and I started watching the entire Dragon Ball cartoon series, from start to finish, that has taken some time.

What are your future plans?

We are touring with our friends Voodoo Beach in November and playing various other shows around Berlin. We are also recording a new record “New Twists in Turning”.
